CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF MERMAID MAGIC!
MERMAID MEMORIES

On October 13, 1947, Newton Perry opened the doors for the first time at Weeki Wachee Springs. 75 years later, the park has been an iconic symbol of Florida tourism, with live mermaid performances known across the world.

Its Name Means Winding Waters

The name Weeki Wachee is Native American, John Athanason tells me, a 20-year former marketing employee of the park. Weeki Wachee can mean either winding waters or winding rivers, and the water is indeed clear for nearly the entire 8-mile journey it makes to Floridas west coast. In the 70s, the park underwent some excavation, and the remains of pottery were found and carbon dated to be over 10,000 years old. These artifacts can be found at the Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.
